When you first learn to Salsa, it may be a good idea to watch a Salsa Dance Video or Salsa DVD before attending Salsa Classes. Visual training aids such as a Salsa Dance Video or Salsa DVD are the next best thing to taking group Salsa Classes and can save you even more time and money.
Salsa Classes – Rhythm and Count
Like every dance genre, you will notice there is a rhythm pattern throughout the songs as you learn to Salsa and maybe take Salsa Classes. Rhythm is defined as a series of beats, differing in length and emphasis, forming a repetitive pattern. The next time you play Salsa Music, notice there is a repetition of eight beats throughout a song.
In the fundamental Salsa pattern we have six physical steps danced to eight beats. For the first three beats of the pattern, you step and shift weight to the foot that corresponds with the beat, then there’s a pause on the fourth beat, and another three beats to which you step and shift weight, corresponding to that beat, then pause and repeat. It’s that easy!
Salsa Classes Rythm & Count Table
| 1” | “2” | “3” | “4” is silent | “5” | “6” | “7” | “8” or silent |
| Clap | Clap | Clap | No Clap | Clap | Clap | Clap | No Clap |
Practice counting and clapping, using the Rhythm and Count Table above. Say “1”, “2”, “3” out loud, don’t say “4”, just and continue with “5”,”6”,”7”, and the “8” is also silent. Then it repeats. The “primary two ingredients” of salsa has been covered and you’re now ready to move on to the third ingredient which will help prepare you for your future spicy Salsa Classes.
