So You Think You Can Dance Finale – August 12, 2010 Episode
Alrighty then, how about that last So You Think You Can Dance Tour
show?
First it was the fashion throughout the So You Think You Can Dance season, but this time, Cat Deeley’s dress was absolutely stunning (even though it looks like the Mini Mini is back in style) with its retro-styled semi-transparent lace over solid black fabric.
Then, it was the performances: After last night’s performances from our three fantastic So You Think You Can Dance finalists, Robert Roldan could still be an unpredictable variable. I suppose I inserted my dance shoe in my vocal orifice when it came to prejudging his performance.
Robert is so graceful and what really struck me in last night’s So You Think You Can Dance Finale when both Robert and Kent danced together to the piece “The Chosen/Drum Addict” by Taylor Long, choreographed by Miriam Larici and Leonardo Barrionuevo to a type of dance called the Malevos Fight (which – I never knew this – is a form of dance that is performed by men in preparation for the Argentine Tango, note to self, will have to research this further… but I digress), watching the two of them perform this dance, I realized they are in essence creating dance history on television and showing America that it is totally cool for men to dance and yes – even to dance together! Nothing wrong with that, guys! In fact, perhaps this will make more men out there realize that it is sexy to dance and makes them more attractive to those of us of the female persuasion.
Speaking of sexy, did I miss something or was it getting hot in the room or is there a lot of chemistry (and we’re not just talking about dance floor chemistry when they were doing their routine during So You Think You Can Dance, folks) going on between Lauren Froderman and Robert Roldon? The way she was hanging on to him was the way I hang on to my silicon-based b/f. How many times did Robert get to kiss her forehead and squeeze her shoulders? Phew!!!
Then, Kent, during and even after his dance with All-Star Allison (song called “Sundrenched World – Live Session” by Joshua Radin and choreographed by Stacey Tookey, a fellow Edmontonian) was so obviously emotional, that it took everything he had not to break down during the judges’ glowing reviews. When asked by Mama Mia whether she heard him correctly saying the unspoken words “Get off of me”, he nodded and could not speak, he was so emotionally charged by the piece. Adam Shankman asked him what he was going through and whether it was something personal, and the only thing that Kent had time to say was “It’s personal” before Adam continued with his critique. We will never truly know what truly inspired Kent to evolve into a true artist during last night’s So You Think You Can Dance performance, but we have Stacey Tookey to thank for creating a piece that finally brought out Kent’s soul into the dance and I do believe that Kent had an “aha” moment and grew in leaps and bounds last night. This is was what dancing is all about: the ability to express and show vulnerability and emotion through dance and to no longer pay attention to the actual steps but to get carried away by the music.
The performances clearly wore out all three dancers and it must have been exhausting work for each of them to learn and master each piece for last night’s performance. I can only imagine how they will be looking forward to getting some rest after the So You Think You Can Dance finale tonight.
Let’s not even go there with Lauren. I wholeheartedly agree with Adam Shankman when he said that if music were a person, she is it. She truly embodies what dance is all about and throughout the competition she has really been able to feel the music and she emanates music from every pore of her body. Her flexibility is frightening at times. I mistakenly took her for Gumby (for those of you too young to remember, that was a very bendy character on television and no, it wasn’t black and white television, it WASN’T that far back). Thank goodness she has the strength and muscles to support her frame and probably does proper warm ups before performing. If she didn’t have strength along with that flexibility, she could really sustain some serious injuries. Either a lack of warmups or muscle strength to support the flexibility is what I suspect may have been the cause of injuries to both Ashley Galvan and Alex Wong, forcing them both out of the So You Think You Can Dance competition prematurely.
I can’t stand the suspense! Who will win? I’m still betting on Kent, although Lauren and Robert have proven they are serious contenders for America’s favorite dancer on So You Think You Can Dance. Robert has grown so much over the series, as has Lauren, so it’s really hard to see these two not win. However, I do feel that Kent has made a definite connection and created fascination with the viewers by showing his emotions last night for the first time, and there will be many women voting for him.
Other than my comments about Robert yesterday, I would say that what I had mentioned yesterday in my blog was bang on! Seriously, folks, if you want to improve with dancing, watching shows like So You Think You Can Dance really helps understand musicality, style, technique and form, not to mention good sportsmanship.
So, now what are we going to watch, now that SYTYCD is over? If you haven’t noticed my Upcoming TV Dance Shows, So You Think You Can Dance Canada season is starting again on August 15, 2010 on CTV, so if you have access to CTV channels wherever you may be, you’ve got to watch it. Sorely missed Mary Murphy, former judge on So You Think You Can Dance (US) is a judge for So You Think You Can Dance Canada and she stated in last season that she felt Canada has the best dancers (better than the US? You be the judge!).
